SEASONAL MARKETS AND SPECIAL AUCTIONS

This page updated August 10, 2007

The Amish bring their produce, crafts, furniture, buggies and horses to the many auctions that take place from early spring to late autumn in the Upper Midwest.

These auctions are special for us 'Englishers' because they are occasions when we feel at ease and free to mix among the Amish, and because it is one of the few times when we might bring a camera for careful photographing.

Please remember that the Amish dislike having portrait photographs taken: when in doubt, ask gently if you might photograph them facing away from you, perhaps with the quilt they have made, or holding the reins of their horse, or working the auction lines.  Photographs taken of the auction activity itself, if shot at a respectful distance, can be the most rewarding, taking in the mix of Amish and English adults and children, their colorful dresses and bonnets, black vests and broadbrimmed hats among our comfortable jeans and t-shirts, overalls and feedcaps.
